LAYLA

It’s been over two weeks since Gabriel took my v-card in the bathroom. It wasn’t the way I envisioned losing it, but I was on such a down low that I didn’t care.

He left the dress and made me feel like some hooker. I’ve avoided him and his brothers since then.

My home life has gotten from bad to worse as not only is Mom treating me like an unwanted roommate, but she’s gone on holiday with Uncle Bob. They’re stressed after receiving the call from Principal Glen that I cheated on my exams.

"The only reason Uncle Bob allows you to stay with us is because we thought you would be in Yale next year," Mom yelled after she returned home from the meeting.

I’m her only daughter. The alimony money she gets from Dad is the only reason she asked for custody. Uncle Bob made that clear the moment Dad got his new job in Finland, which was paying triple what he used to pay after we left our old home.

He said that I should live with Mom so I could stay in America, and I wouldn't have the hassle of having to learn a new language. "Besides, you’ve always wanted to go to Yale since you were a baby, Laylee," Dad said when he told me about the terms of their divorce and the news that I would be living with Mom. The woman who was cheating on him with Uncle Bob. As soon as Dad was on the flight and the divorce was finalized, they got married.

Dad left a heartbroken man, trying to keep peace for my sake, or maybe his? I don't know. We speak on the phone once in a while, email occasionally, but the frequency is less and less.

You want to hang out today?

I put a message in my BFF's group, hoping that today one of them will reply. It’s Saturday, and most eighteen-year-olds would be hanging with their friends or even their boyfriends. It's as if once word got out that I cheated in an exam, the reputation I once had is now officially over.

Sophia: Can't. Hanging out with my boyfriend again. Maybe next week.

Emily: Same here.

That’s another thing that changed; my BFFs and I were all single, now I'm the only one single and dying for their company. Sophia said the same thing to me last week. This is her way of blowing me off. I don't bother texting a reply. There's no point because it looks as if it's Netflix and me once again.
